My 60th birthday

We were very fortunate with the weather - or was it just my impeccable organisation again? Not quite as sunny as yesterday, but not nearly as windy either - and thankfully dry and mild. We were also pleased to see that we were back on mostly summer greens.

The troops turned up in good time and congregated on the 1st tee, champing at the bit:

The first match off was me and my erstwhile doubles partner, now returned to these shores, but minus tache - versus the non-squashers Grant and Lodge:

We had a good close match, which the two Ians won on the last hole - courtesy of a birdie 3 from yours truly! At the 16th tee (summer 17th) we were startled by a commotion and flurry of feathers immediately above our heads - we had just witnessed a mid-air kill of one of the doos by a sparrow hawk. The hawk took its prey to ground right beside the tee and sat on it for several minutes until it was absolutely sure the doo was well and truly deid. Soft hearted Gary tried to chase the hawk away, but we assured him it wasn't necessary as the hawk had probably broken the doo's neck in mid flight, and, anyway, it was just nature:

The overall match was a close-run affair. The squash team players (Freeman and Gray) lost the 2nd match by 2 holes to Simpson and Edwards (although Jack subsequently maintained it was really 3 holes). The 3rd string match was also a victory for the non-squashers - Moir and Taylor lost by 4 holes to Sharp and Meany.

Thankfully, the 4th team of Riches and Salter came good and rescued the squash players with a 7 hole victory over Meaden and Pollard, to leave the overall match 8-6 in favour of the squash players.

We were joined by the non-golfers and partners/wives and had some ale and wine and dined at the carvery afterwards - here are some of the table photos:

Jo organised a birthday cake for me - it was only afterwards that I noticed that one of the characters on the golf-themed cake looked a little odd:

What was all this about?

Anyway, thanks to all for a great day - and I hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did.
