It was the 8th year of playing The Challenge and, after much juggling of the teams, we finally managed four men's teams and one ladies' for what promised to be a much closer match than previous years. The weather held fair and most of us gathered in the clubhouse early on for bacon butties and to watch the start of the Scotland - Argentina World Cup match.
The English Nationalists were out in full force, flying their flags:
Debutant Geordie Ziegler (USA), Jack Simpson & Syd Freeman admire Syd's handiwork with his car |
Rob Pollard waves the flags |
Ian Sharp, Raymond Orr (Africa), Gary Grant & Syd Freeman |
Les Gray, Ian Stewart, Hugh Riches & Rob Pollard |
Our group all hit good tee shots at the Doo'cot:
Hugh surrounded by balls - mine furthest left (2), Hugh's (2), Rob's (2), and, behind Hugh, Les' ball (lipped out!) |
The buzz going round the course was that a shock result was on the cards and it could be a first ever defeat for Scotland, and so it was to prove - but, unlike our rugby team, we didn't even come close! Here's the match scores:
- Grant & Sharp lost by 3 holes to Freeman & Orr
- Stewart & Gray (L) lost by 1 hole to Pollard & Riches (H)
- Taylor & Gray (K) lost by 6 holes to defector Page & Meaden (J)
- Corbett & Simpson lost by 2 holes to Fulford (S) & Ziegler
- Riches (J) & Wilson tied with Fulford (J) & Meaden (A)
So, 0-12 was the score - not even one match did Scotland win - there could be changes next year!
Keith tried to take the photo of the trophy presentation, but the light behind Rob and I made it very difficult:
I made a bit of a cod of the winning team photo as well:
John Meaden, Rob Pollard, Hugh Riches, Janice Fulford, Anna Meaden, Ken Page & Steve Fulford. Missing from winning RoW photo are Syd Freeman, Raymond Orr & Geordie Ziegler. |
Another great end of season event - roll on next year.
