Tuesday was the Broch, and, on Wednesday afternoon we had another free round - a friendly fourball at Glenbervie. I played with my brother-in-law, Brian Hanson in a little match against Malcolm (who goes down to the Central Belt car auctions every Wednesday) and Dan (still resident in Linlithgow - until next week).
It's a nice friendly, open, parkland course with fine views of the hills from the first tee - unfortunately (and accidentally) omitted from this team photo:
It was the proverbial game of 2 halves - I was one over par (22 points) for the front nine and Malcolm was one over par (21 points) for the back nine. I just managed to pip Malcolm - my 38 points being one more than Malcolm's 37. Dan was a very useful fourball partner for Malcolm off a 21 handicap - look forward to that reducing substantially when he comes back to Banchory and plays regular medals there - and came in with 34 points, with my partner, unfortunately trailing behind us all, despite a very good start. The upshot was a 2 & 1 victory for Malcolm and Dan.
There's a couple of enormous rhododendron bushes (we think that's what they were) at the side of the 17th green:
Nice clubhouse too - revolving door entrance and there, in front of you, the man whose name will always be synonymous with Glenbervie is commemorated:
Very enjoyable day out - although the knee injury I've been carrying worsened considerably on the back nine and I barely managed to limp home, which resulted in me having to cancel a corporate invite to Macrihanish yesterday and Gordon's freebie at Newmachar this afternoon. I decided I was not going to pass up the opportunity of golfing in this fine weather entirely however and have managed to secure the hire of the buggy for the medal at Banchory in the morning. So, if you see me poncing around the course in the buggy tomorrow, please don't mock - have some sympathy for the injured golfer.
