The course was finally clear of snow yesterday and we were able to get Q2 played - one of the very few times we've played on a Friday. Five of us showed up and, as there was nobody else around, we decided to play a sociable 5-ball. That didn't last long, however, as we spotted a couple of groups gathering at the first tee and so, Ian McR and I headed off, with Syd, Harry and Steve following.
It was a little damp at first, but soon layers were peeled off and conditions were more than acceptable - very still - ideal for midges.
Back in the clubhouse we were joined by Jas and his son-in-law, Kevin, who were out for a few holes. A new cask of Brains' SA Gold went down well - Jas had warned us to avoid the stale Spitfire. It was Syd's first drink for - I don't know exactly how long - but it comes at a good time - some pre-tournament training for the Desert Classic in Turkey which begins in less than 2 weeks. We don't want a repeat of the Iberian Cup first night!
It was Syd's first appearance in the Quaich for 3 years and, wouldn't you know it, he was the winner yesterday with 36 points - his first weekly Quaich win since 10th May, 2006. Steve and Ian were making their debuts this season and scored 35 and 32 points respectively. Harry very nearly made it two weekly DoD's in a row, but he just managed to pip me on countback with 28 points. After years of avoiding a DoD, I've now managed to rack up 3 of them in very short time - what's happening? (In my defence, I was feeling a bit poorly and have now had to cancel all outdoor activities this weekend - feeble, I know.)
So to the presentation - not the best quality photo that Ian has taken - but it's the first official award of a 2012 ball (Keith still hasn't got his from last week):
