It didn't bode well for our 53rd official outing to Boat of Garten, but we think we dodged a bullet. OK, it was windy on Sunday and we got one nasty squall on Monday, but, overall, the weather was a lot better than we had been led to believe it would be - and the competition - a bit like the Premiership finish that we watched in the bar of the Ben Mhor Hotel on Sunday afternoon - was the closest fought and the tightest finish for many years.
The defending champion was first off at Grantown:
Whilst Malcolm was teeing off, the rest of the gang were wrapping up warm and preparing for the battle against the elements:
The scoring was remarkably good, given the 3 club wind we were playing in. Amazingly, 5 finished on 33 points and there had to be a lot of countback calculations to decide who should be in the leading group for the final round at Boat of Garten. Jas, Bill, Les and I eventually got the nod and Malcolm was relegated to the second string. The overall average score was 30.5 and the range of scores was just 8 points from top to bottom.
Archie, Dan & Malcolm respectively got the NP & LD prizes and the team event was narrowly won by Jas, Archie, Dan & Jack - they managed 80 points in the best 2 stableford scores, with the other teams just 1 & 2 points behind. Especially commendable was the effort of the first team of Malcolm, Dick and I, who only had 3 players - they had the highest average score by far but the lack of a 4th player proved just too much.
We scurried back to the hotel to check in and drop our bags off before heading for the bar in the Ben Mhor to watch the amazing finish to the Premiership season. Dinner was early - 6:45 - and was preceded by the usual G & T's. An early finish allowed most of us to go back to the Ben Mhor and watch the golf from Sawgrass before retiring to bed, with our alcohol cravings now more than satisfied.
