We finally got lucky on Friday when 15 of us gathered again at Tarland for the replayed Midsummer Outing. It hadn't looked promising however as the rain lashed down in Aberdeen in the morning, but Upper Deeside seemed to escape most of this and the course was in good condition when we teed off at 3pm, as the skies steadily brightened.
To provide some variety, I asked if it would be OK for us to play off the white tees, as, unlike the yellows, there are 18 different tees which make the course much more interesting. There was some muttering about this at the start - but not half as much as there was later, as everyone struggled to score, with most holes being out of reach for most of us, with no run at all on the fairways. Greens in Regulation stats must have been the lowest ever.
Here's the clans gathering at the start as Gary tee'd up:
We gathered in the Aberdeen Arms afterwards for a couple of ales, followed by the prize-giving. It was - as I re-iterated several times on Friday - the cheapest ever golf outing. Just £6 for green fees for 18 holes, plus £4 for bacon butties (for most) and, a little amazingly, only £5 per head for drinks - a grand total of £15 for a great day out.
The average score was just 25.7 and only 2 people got in to the 30's - Malcolm was the clear winner with 33 points, with Bill W next best on 31. In 3rd place with 29 points was my brother-in-law Brian Hanson, my guest for the weekend.
With Malcolm and Bill in the same team, it was no surprise that they won the team prize too, with a best 2 stableford scores at each hole of 73 points, with Ian McRae being towed along by the two leaders. Brian, Keith and I were next best on 68 points.
Nearest the Pin at the 3rd hole - in fact the only one to hit the green there, albeit 60-70 feet away from the pin, was Jas. Nobody could even reach the green, even with drivers, at the 16th, but Ken P won the Longest Drive at the 18th. Here's the full scores:
